About

"Prof Chris Phillips entitled as "An Invisible Man""

  • Prof. Chris Phillips is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Head of the Optoelectronics section at Imperial College, London. Chris is a Physicist who got his Ph.D. using specialised lasers to study the sort of semiconductor crystals that nowadays make up our computers and ipods. They also which built the internet that allows them (and us!) to talk to each other. After a spell travelling, and working for the BBC, he joined the Physics Department at Imperial College as a Lecturer in 1985. Apart from a year at the University of Santa Barbara in California, he has stayed there ever since. On the research front, he has become interested in using "Quantum Metamaterials", crystals that are artificially structured on a length scale of one nanometre ( i.e. a thousand millionth of a metre), to generate new materials that e.g. have negative refractive indices, and which can be made to vanish when they are illuminated with an invisible laser. He has published more than 220 papers and graduated 23 PhD students with 100% success rate.He is well-known for making things vanish temporarily with invisible laser beams, developing laser-based biomedical imaging techniques, demonstrating Quantum dots, fire-breathing and the special water pistol equipped with the laser. On the communications side he gives international public lecture tours, TV interviews and officiate at International competitions for youngsters. ABOUT

"Founder of the free software movement,1983"

  • Richard Stallman founded the free software movement in 1983 when he announced he would develop the GNU operating system, a Unix-like operating system meant to consist entirely of free software. He has been the GNU project's leader ever since. In October 1985 he started the Free Software Foundation.
Since the mid-1990s, Stallman has spent most of his time in political advocacy for free software, and spreading the ethical ideas of the movement, as well as campaigning against both software patents and dangerous extension of copyright laws. Before that, Richard developed a number of widely used programs that are components of GNU, including the original Emacs, the GNU Compiler Collection, the GNU symbolic debugger (gdb), GNU Emacs, and various others.
Stallman pioneered the concept of copyleft, and is the main author of the GNU General Public License, the most widely used free software license.
Stallman graduated from Harvard in 1974 with a BA in physics. During his college years and after, he worked as a staff hacker at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, learning operating system development by doing it. He wrote the first extensible Emacs text editor there in 1975. He also developed the AI technique of dependency-directed backtracking, also known as truth maintenance. In January 1984 he resigned from MIT to start the GNU project.

Invent

Invention distinguishes between a leader and a follower. You have to have a big vision and take very small steps to get there. You have to be humble as you execute but visionary and gigantic in terms of your aspiration. It's about a lot of little innovations: every day, every week, every month, making something a little bit better.
